Senior Stories

This is JJ. He came to the sanctuary in Sept of 2016. He was covered in ticks, overweight, suffering with infected teeth, and low thyroid. JJ is doing very well now. His thyroid is under control with meds, and his teeth have been cleaned several times since he arrived. JJ has slimmed down to a nice weight and he loves patrolling the back yard for pecans with Pudge. His coat is not always as healthy as what we would like, but he enjoys a nice bath and a belly rub.

This is Max. He and his Mom Ginger came to the sanctuary in June of 2016. They were more than bonded, they were family. Max was born about 2006. Sadly we lost his Mom in Oct of 2016 and Max grieved her loss till Rick and I thought he might not come out of it. But Max is resilient and he is doing fine now. Max and his Mom were both extremely overweight when they arrived but Max has slimmed down to a very manageable weight. He is healthy and active and can often be found curled up with Pudge or MIssy.

This is Lady Bug. She came to the sanctuary in May 2018 from Oklahoma. Lady Bug is 16 years old and has a stubborn streak a mile wide. When she first arrived she stayed completely hidden under a blanket 24 hours a day. She has since ventured out and even uses the doggie door from the kitchen to the back yard. Lady knows when it is her meal time and will come to the gate in the kitchen to be put in to a wire crate to eat, but she never wants to be touched.  She has a gruff senior bark and she uses it to let me know when she has finished her meal. Then she does her little dance in the crate to try to keep me from touching her.  "Feed me now, don't touch me, feed me now, don't you dare touch me!"

This is Pudge. She came to us September 2016 as an owner turn in. Pudge was born in 2003 and is a very laid back little lady. She loves pecan season when the pecans begin to fall and can often be found with her "collection" of pecans on her bed each evening. Pudge takes daily meds for thyroid issues. We sometimes struggle to keep weight on this baby but her blood tests and exams continue to show she is healthy. Pudge is a sweet and docile little girl.

This is Missy. She was born in 2002 and has been at the sanctuary for almost a year. Missy has a thyroid condition that is regulated with meds and regular blood tests. She is a sweet little lady that loves exploring the yard. Missy has a favorite bed in the Doggie Room and can always be found curled up with Ditto who is a Chihuahua that she is bonded with.

These two precious little girls are Butterfly (brown dapple) and Maddie. These girls came to us from Ft. Worth Humane Society in April of 2016. Butterfly was born in 2005 and Maddie in 2007. These two were as bonded as any babies I have ever known. Butterfly was nosey and bossy. Maddie is calm and gentle. Maddie is terrified of thunder, but Butterfly was fearless.  Maddie takes meds for seizures and has done very well since starting those meds. They slept together in one bed most of the time.

This is Baby Jade. She came to us in 2002 as a puppy having multiple seizures a day. She took meds for years to help control the seizures and now we are so happy to say that she hasn't had a seizure in several years. Baby Jade has been with us longer than any of our other babies. She now deals with some arthritis in her back legs but overall she is very healthy. I named her Baby Jade as she has always had a touch of the dramatic in her blood and makes sure everyone knows she is a delicate flower.

This is Pete. Some of you may remember we rescued Pete and his Mom Lucy years ago from a breeder. Sadly we lost his Mom last year at the age of 16. Pete was rejected by the breeder because he was born without his back feet. Pete has been here at the sanctuary for 14 years. He gets around fairly well as he does have pads on the bottom of his back legs. Pete loves to spend his days curled up in a bed in the kitchen. Sweet little man!

Atlas

  • Current status: Adoptable
  • Estimated Year of Birth: 2011
  • Date of arrival at Sanctuary: Aug 2021
  • Circumstances of arrival: picked up off the streets and couldn’t walk; received water and laser therapy at Doc Jess’ clinic and regained use of his back legs.
  • Love language: kisses and going for walks
  • Adopter needs to know: although he has regained the use of his back legs, he still (and probably always will) walk a bit differently.
  • Personality: lots of energy and loves attention
  • Vanessa says: He can be overly friendly with the other dogs, but we’ve moved him to a space with just two others and he’s doing well. He loves walks and will try to catch your attention when you walk in the room! He’s very excited to see you.

Makayla

  • Current status: Adoptable
  • Estimated Year of Birth: 2010
  • Date of arrival at Sanctuary: Sep 2020
  • Circumstances of arrival: owner turn in; lost her eyes to cataract surgery and needed a safe place to land.
  • Love language: barking and sun bathing
  • Adopter needs to know: while she lost both eyes, she gets around just fine. She memorizes her areas and uses her other senses to compensate.
  • Personality: full of gumption
  • Vanessa says: She goes in and out as she pleases. She is a very calm, loving girl who deserves a wonderful home full of love.

Note on sight-impaired dogs: humans "swim" in a sea of images while dogs "swim" in a sea of scents.  These pups can sense tiny changes in the intensity of a smell, giving them ample information to find a water bowl, to tell different toys apart, and to locate any door.  Takes them a couple of hours.

NADIA

  •  Name: Nadia
  • Current status: Adoptable
  • Estimated Year of Birth: 2012
  • Date of arrival at Sanctuary: Aug 2021
  • Circumstances of arrival: came from a shelter in OK; arrived with kennel cough, which was treated successfully.
  • Love language: photo bombing!
  • Adopter needs to know: She will always need to be on thyroxine for hypothyroidism. It’s a pretty simple maintenance med.
  • Personality: She’s a calm sweetheart.
  • Vanessa says: She is a dapple. She got here when we first got the new building up and running and is really sweet. She deserves a great home! She does NOT love water or bath time…

RIZ

  • Age: 11
  • Date of arrival at Sanctuary: Aug 2022🌹
  • Circumstances of arrival: owner turn in
  • Love language: sleepy time and snuggles
  • Adopter needs to know: This sweet little red pup is timid at first.
  • Personality: Riz is a friendly and loving little lady that needs a new forever home of her own.
  • Vanessa says: She is crate trained for food and likes to sleep. She does love affection once she warms up to you!

Goldie Girl

  • Age: 10
Date of arrival at Sanctuary: Oct 2022
  • Circumstances of arrival: Goldie was picked up off the streets with three very tight collars around her neck. Her first angel had to cut them off of her. She was delivered to Doc Jess, and we agreed to take her into the Sanctuary. She had horrible teeth. In fact they were so bad that Doc Jess delayed her spay surgery for another visit after an extensive dental, when she did end up losing many of her teeth. It doesn’t slow her down a bit!
  • Love language: exploring and attention
  • Adopter needs to know: she loves to explore and enjoyed sneaking out of her room at Open House to say howdy to all the visitors who were clearly there to see her!
  • Personality: extremely friendly! Loves cuddling, children, teenagers, adults, everyone!
  • Vanessa says: This “Chi-weenie” is one of our smallest residents! She still eats kibble mixed with a bit of canned food.

Sooner

  •  Age: 14
  • Date of arrival at Sanctuary: Jan 2023
  • Circumstances of arrival: Sooner and another resident, Bud, came to us when their owner entered hospice. They were originally bonded, and we’d hoped to keep them together. However, when other dogs are around, it changes the group dynamic and these two don’t get along anymore! Bud resides in our fragile resident room, but she is happier in a more active pack.
  • Love language: attention and affection
  • Adopter needs to know: She is kind-of bossy, but really likes meeting new dogs!
  • Personality: Sooner is excited about life and likes to play! She is good with other dogs and is very affectionate.
  • Vanessa says: She’s very sweet and she trots around like nothing in the world bothers her!
